These aren’t all reviews in the ordinary sense
in that some are just thoughts on a particular
pieces of equipment. Just click on the Blue Link
to take you to the full report. I own all the
equipment reviewed here incidentally.
Yamaha RX-A3080 A/V Receiver
I thought I’d kick off with the gear I actually use
at home - this is the new Yamaha RX-A3080
which is arguably the most advanced A/V
Receiver available as of time of writing.
Martin Logan Motion 60XT
Speakers
Air movement is the basis of all loudspeakers
so, generally (although not necessarily) for a
full, room filling sound, the bigger the better
within reason. The Martin Logan 60XT’s are big
buggers which have a big sound.
Martin Logan Dynamo 700
Subwoofer
This unit has now been replaced by the
Dynamo 800x which adds App control, ARC
Room Correction and other such niceties, all of
which I find superfluous although I suspect
many technophiles will embrace and claim they
couldn’t do without them. Regardless, the
Dynamo 700/800x is an amazing sub-woofer
which stands head and shoulders above any
other sub I’ve tested for a combination of both
Music and Home Theatre given their modest
size.
I’ll admit that REL may be slightly better
musically and the big Paradigms better for
movies but I’ve heard no better compromise
than the Dynamo 700 (except when I use two
Dynamo 700’s). These don’t kick you in the
Cojones as a couple of 18” 4000 Watt units
would but one has to be reasonable both
financially and aesthetically.
Paradigm 15B Bookshelf
Speaker
Speakers need to be relevant to room size so in
my small Music Room/Office which is only 4 X 3
metres, a large floorstanding speaker would
not fit so I went for a Bookshelf
Speaker/Subwoofer combination. After many
trials at home, I chose the Paradigm 15B along
with old favourite, Martin Logan Dynamo 700
Sub.
